Techo-Bloc Home Additions & ADU: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We routinely price full Techo-Bloc home additions and ADU builds across Los Angeles between $53,100 and $153,400, depending on footprint, foundation work, and interior finish level. The number most homeowners actually need is the one we put in writing before any demo starts. If you’re reading this, you likely have a failing slab, a cracked paver wall, or a foundation issue tied to an existing Techo-Bloc installation and you want to know whether it can be saved or needs to come out. Trevor Nash has walked enough Los Angeles backyards to tell you plainly: most Techo-Bloc base failures can be fixed, but the repair has to address what’s under the stone, not just what’s sitting on top of it.
We are an independent Los Angeles remodeler. We are not affiliated with Techo-Bloc, and we don’t pretend to be. We do work with their product lines regularly, and we know what holds up in Southern California sun, clay soil, and the occasional earthquake that sends every patio in the Valley a half-inch sideways.
Which Techo-Bloc Models This Applies To

If your addition or ADU project involves Techo-Bloc pavers, retaining walls, or slab edging, the compatibility questions usually come down to series and generation. Techo-Bloc runs a few distinct collections that Los Angeles contractors use heavily: the Blu 60 and Blu 80 slabs, the Industria and Mista paver lines, and the Raffinato step and wall units. The gotcha we see on nearly every LA job: older Techo-Bloc color lots fade differently under high UV than the same color purchased new today. If you’re patching five pavers against a patio poured in 2012, an exact-match piece ordered today will not match. We flag this before ordering so you’re not stuck with a checkerboard look you hate.
For identifying what you have, flip a paver or wall cap. Techo-Bloc stamps the series name on the bottom or back face of most pieces. The size and thickness are also identifiable: Blu 60 slabs run 24 x 24 inches at 60mm thick; Blu 80 runs the same footprint at 80mm thick. That thickness difference matters for driveways, since Los Angeles code and practical load-bearing both favor the thicker unit under vehicle weight.
OEM Techo-Bloc is the right call when you’re matching an existing color lot or need the manufacturer’s structural warranty on a new build. Quality aftermarket concrete units can work for new standalone installations where color matching isn’t a factor. For ADU foundations and retaining walls that hold back Los Angeles hillside soil, we recommend sticking with OEM or an engineered block system, not a bargain substitute.

Signs Your Techo-Bloc Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Pavers rocking or shifting underfoot. This usually means the base layer, not the paver itself, has compacted unevenly or washed out. In Los Angeles, we see this after heavy rains on slopes where drainage wasn’t run correctly.
- Retaining wall leaning or bulging. More than about an inch of outward lean over four feet of wall height signals the wall has lost its structural grip on the soil behind it. On hillside ADU pads in Echo Park or Mount Washington, this is a genuine safety issue.
- Cracks radiating across a paver deck or slab. Hairline cracks are normal in concrete over time. Cracks wider than the edge of a nickel, especially in a stair-step pattern, point to base failure or active soil movement.
- Step units pulling away from the riser. Techo-Bloc step systems rely on a lip and adhesive bond. When that bond fails, the tread slides forward. It starts as a quarter-inch gap and becomes a trip hazard fast.
- Water pooling in places it didn’t before. A settled paver patio that once drained now holds puddles after rain. That standing water works into the base material and accelerates the failure.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For most Los Angeles homeowners, repairing or replacing failed Techo-Bloc work runs between $4,130 and $21,240 for patio, walkway, or retaining wall repairs. A full home addition or ADU project involving Techo-Bloc hardscape typically lands between $53,100 and $153,400 when you factor in foundation, framing, rough plumbing and electrical, insulation, drywall, and finish trade work. The hardscape portion itself is usually only a slice of that total.
What drives the number up or down: access for equipment, whether the existing base material can be recompacted or must be fully excavated and replaced, the specific Techo-Bloc series you’re matching, and whether Los Angeles hillside grading rules come into play. We give you a written, line-item price before work starts, so you’ll see exactly what goes to materials, what goes to labor, and what goes to haul-off.
Every repair and every addition carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the work fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. No service call, no re-inspection fee. That second visit is free if the repair fails. That’s how Trevor ran every job since day one, and it’s how Penhallow Remodeling Los Angeles still runs them.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do the inspection work yourself. Walk the perimeter of your patio or wall, check for visible lean, test a few pavers underfoot, and look for pooling after rain. Note where the movement is and take photos before calling us. That helps us quote accurately over the phone.
What you should not do is pull up Techo-Bloc base material, rebuild a retaining wall, or re-level a paver deck on a slope without knowing what’s underneath. Retaining walls hold back real weight. A wall that fails can move soil, and in some Los Angeles hillside neighborhoods, that soil movement can reach a neighbor’s foundation or a hillside ADU pad. That’s not a weekend project. If the wall is already leaning, call us at (213) 277-6578 and we’ll tell you if it’s repairable or whether it needs engineered replacement. That phone call gets a real person, any hour.
FAQs

A properly installed Techo-Bloc hardscape on compacted base material should last 25 to 40 years in the Los Angeles climate, though UV fading and drainage issues can shorten the surface appearance well before structural failure shows up. Call (213) 277-6578 if yours is failing early; we’ll diagnose whether it’s a base problem or a material problem.
Yes, if the wall is leaning less than about two inches total and the base is still intact, we can often excavate behind the wall, improve drainage, and re-set the upper courses rather than rebuilding from scratch. Once the base has shifted or the geogrid has failed, a rebuild is the safer call. Get a free estimate and we’ll tell you which path yours is on.
A typical paver patio repair with base recompaction takes two to three working days from start to finish. Retaining wall rebuilds run longer, often one to two weeks depending on height, access, and whether the city requires a permit. Our estimate includes the full timeline in writing, so you know the crew’s arrival window before we start.
We order Techo-Bloc product directly per project rather than stocking a warehouse full of sun-faded units, because a brand-new paver that’s never seen UV will never match your 2016 patio. We do keep a small truck stock of common joint sand, base material, and adhesives so basic repairs can start the day you call. For exact-series Techo-Bloc materials, we place the order once you’ve approved the written price.
