GAF Fence Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

GAF fence installation in Los Angeles typically runs $4,130 to $10,620 for a complete project, depending on linear footage, terrain, and the fence material you choose. We install fence systems that work alongside GAF roofing and exterior products, and most projects are completed within three to five working days once materials arrive. Homeowners usually find us because a fence has started leaning after winter rains, a gate drags against concrete that’s shifted, or termite damage has finally shown through the bottom rail. The job needs a contractor who understands how Los Angeles soil moves, not just someone who can set a post.

GAF is a roofing and exterior products manufacturer, and while they’re known for shingles and underlayment, their accessory lines include components that integrate with residential fence and gate systems. We’ve installed fence projects on properties with GAF roofing across Los Angeles neighborhoods from Woodland Hills to Eagle Rock, and we know the product line well enough to match the right post anchors, gates, and hardware to the existing exterior. We’re an independent contractor, not a GAF dealer or affiliate, so our recommendations are based on what actually holds up here, not on moving a brand’s inventory.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

GAF’s exterior accessory catalog includes residential fence components under their Timberline and Grand Sequoia accessory lines, as well as gate hardware packages that pair with their roofing warranties on new construction. The compatibility question matters more than most owners expect. A GAF post anchor designed for a 4×4 pressure-treated post won’t accept a 4×4 composite post without a sleeve or adapter, and mixing those on a Los Angeles hillside lot is how you get a leaning fence by the second rainy season.

The practical way to identify what you have is to look at the post base first. GAF stamps their post anchors and gate hinge plates with a small model code near the bolt holes, usually a two-letter prefix followed by a number. If that stamp is gone, measure the post pocket with a tape measure before ordering anything. For the OEM-versus-aftermarket call, we’re straightforward: GAF’s own anchors and hinges are worth the premium on gate posts and corner posts because the galvanization is heavier than what you get on generic hardware. For mid-span line posts, a quality aftermarket anchor from Simpson Strong-Tie or Ozco does the same job for less money, and we’ve used both with no callbacks. One Los Angeles-specific caveat: if you’re within three miles of the coast, pay the extra for stainless steel fasteners over the standard galvanized. Salt air eats standard zinc coating in about five years.

Signs Your GAF Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Posts leaning more than 5 degrees out of plumb. In Los Angeles, this usually traces back to one of two causes: the original post hole wasn’t deep enough for our expansive clay soil, or the concrete footer was poured without gravel drainage at the base. Water pools, soil heaves, and the post slowly walks out of alignment.
  • Gate sagging and scraping the ground on the latch side. The GAF hinge plate itself rarely fails. What fails is the lag bolt connection into the post, especially if the original installer used 3-inch lags instead of 4-inch through-bolts. We see this on gates across the San Fernando Valley where afternoon heat expands and contracts the wood daily.
  • Bottom rails pulling away from posts. This is the classic termite or dry-rot signature in Los Angeles. Once the bottom rail loses its structural bite into the post, the whole panel starts racking, and the fasteners follow the damage outward.
  • Post anchors popping up out of the concrete. GAF anchor bolts are well made. The failure here is almost always the concrete itself, mixed too wet or poured against loose soil. We find this a lot in the hills above Glendale and Pasadena, where the original footer was undersized for the wind load.
  • Fence panels rattling in the wind or bowing between posts. Over-spanned panels are a Los Angeles constant. An 8-foot panel between posts is fine in a sheltered backyard, but a 6-foot privacy panel with a 10-foot span on an exposed ridgeline will fatigue in a season.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled staircase with wood treads and a slim metal railing

For Los Angeles homeowners, a full GAF-compatible fence installation runs $4,130 to $10,620. That range reflects what we actually see on the ground. A standard backyard privacy fence of 60 to 80 linear feet with pressure-treated or cedar pickets, new posts, concrete footers, and GAF-compatible hardware usually lands between $4,500 and $7,000. The number climbs when you’re dealing with hillside lots that need stepped panels, when the old fence has to be demolished and hauled, or when access means carrying every post through a side gate that’s 30 inches wide.

What’s included in our number: removal and haul-away of the old fence, all new posts and concrete, panels and rails, GAF-matched or aftermarket hardware (we’ll show you the cost difference before you choose), and a walk-through with you before we break ground. The written price we give you before work starts is the price on the final invoice. Period. That’s the Kingswell standard, and it’s been the operating rule since 2004. If something fails inside 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge under the Done Right Promise. That’s in writing on every fence project.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s an honest middle ground here, and we’ll tell you what it is. You can absolutely pull a string line, check which posts are out of plumb, and identify which sections need replacing. That inspection work is safe and it saves you from paying someone to stand in your yard and point. What goes wrong with DIY fence installations in Los Angeles is almost always the footers. Our soil here is clay that expands when wet and shrinks when dry. A post hole dug to 18 inches in a part of town where the frost line isn’t a factor sounds fine, but it won’t hold against the soil movement. We set posts at a minimum of 24 inches in Los Angeles and pour footers with gravel drainage at the base, because we’ve torn out enough fences that failed at 18 inches.

If you’re replacing a single picket or a cracked gate hinge plate, that’s a hardware-store afternoon. If you’re setting posts, pouring concrete, or hanging a gate on a slope, call someone who does this weekly. Call (213) 277-6578 and Trevor or the team will give you a number first, then pick up the tools.
