Boral Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Boral paver driveway installation in Los Angeles typically runs $8,260 – $21,240, and if you have a failing section rather than a full redo, spot repair usually falls between $1,200 and $3,800 depending on how much base we have to rebuild. We stock Boral-compatible pavers and edging on our trucks, so most Los Angeles jobs are done in one visit. Here’s how most homeowners figure out they have a problem: a paver sinks in one corner after winter rain, the sand between joints washes out, or a section shifts and now the garage door catches on it. You’re not crazy, Boral pavers are solid product, but the base under them fails long before the paver itself does, especially in Los Angeles neighborhoods with expansive clay soil like parts of the San Fernando Valley and Pasadena foothills.

Which Boral Models This Applies To

Boral pulled out of the U.S. concrete paver market in 2019 after Calstone and Belgard acquired most of their product lines, so what we see in Los Angeles are older Boral installations, usually the Boral Clay Paver line, the Boral Stone line, or their interlocking concrete pavers sold through Southland Masonry and ORCO through the 2000s and 2010s. The specific paver name matters less than two things: the paver dimensions and the joint width. Most Boral pavers run 60mm or 80mm thick, and Los Angeles driveways almost always used 80mm units, 4×8 or 6×9 in a herringbone or running bond pattern. If you have a leftover paver under the house or behind the garage, flip it over and look for a stamp on the bottom, most Boral pavers have a two or three letter mold code. Take a photo of that plus a tape measure across the paver face, and we can usually match it from our truck stock or our local Los Angeles supplier within 48 hours. On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Boral is out of the U.S. market, so true OEM replacement pavers are getting hard to source. What we install most often in Los Angeles now is a dimensional equivalent from Calstone, Belgard, or Basalite, matched for thickness, color family, and surface texture. A mismatched paver sticks out worse than a faded one, so we’d rather replace a larger section with a close match than drop in one “almost right” paver that looks wrong from the street.

Signs Your Boral Driveway & Pavers Are Failing

  • Sunken pavers near the edges or down the center of the driveway. This is almost always base failure, not paver failure. In Los Angeles, we get it from years of irrigation overspray softening the road base, or from tree roots along the parkway pushing up through decomposed granite. The paver itself is fine; the ground under it gave up.
  • Sand washing out of the joints after rain. If you see tiny piles of sand at the low end of your driveway after every storm, the joint stabilization has broken down. Left alone, the pavers start shifting and chipping at the corners, because the sand lock is what holds the whole field together.
  • Rocking or moving pavers underfoot. Step on a paver and it tips. That’s a void under the paver, usually from a settling base or from ants. Southern California gets the full ant experience, Argentine ants love tunneling through paver sand. A rocking paver is one bad turn away from cracking.
  • Spalling or cracked paver faces. This is a paver issue, not a base issue. We see it on older Boral units in Los Angeles where the surface has worn thin, or where someone sealed the driveway incorrectly years ago and trapped moisture under the sealer. Spalled pavers should be replaced, not sealed over.
  • Edging that’s crept out of line. If the plastic or aluminum paver edging along the driveway is visible, bent, or popped loose at the spikes, the whole perimeter has lost tension. Pavers drift when the edge lets go, and within a season you’ll see gaps opening up along the border rows.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest Los Angeles pricing picture. Full Boral-compatible paver driveway installation runs $8,260 – $21,240, which includes demolition and haul-off of the old surface, new road base compacted in lifts, bedding sand, the pavers themselves, edge restraint, joint sand, and compaction. Spot repair, meaning we pull a failed section, rebuild the base, and relay the same pavers with new sand, runs $1,200 – $3,800 depending on square footage and how much base material has to come out and go back in. What drives the price higher: driveway slope (hillside lots in Echo Park or Silver Lake need more base work and drainage consideration), access for material runs, and paver matching when we have to source a specific color from a local Southern California supplier. Lower: a flat lot with good truck access and a straightforward pattern. Every quote is written and itemized before we start. The number you approve is the number you pay. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, so if a section settles inside the first year, we come back and fix it, no service call, no re-inspection fee. That’s in writing on every driveway job we do in Los Angeles.

DIY or Call Us?

I’ll give you a straight answer, and I want you to be safe. Paver work isn’t electrical or gas work, but it’s heavier than it looks and the injuries are real when they happen. A full pallet of pavers weighs over 3,000 pounds, and we’ve all seen the guy who decides to move 4×8 pavers by hand all weekend and can’t stand up straight on Monday. What you can safely do: measure your pavers, check for the stamp on the bottom, clear the area, and take photos from a few angles before calling us. What you shouldn’t do: pull up a section and rebuild it yourself using bagged sand from the big-box store. Big-box paver sand isn’t the same gradation as bulk polymeric or mason’s sand, and a DIY base repair over poor drainage will sink again inside two winters, usually right where you parked your car. If you’re in Los Angeles and you have a Boral driveway problem, call (213) 277-6578 and we’ll come look at it, give you a written number, and you can decide from there. No pressure, no upsell.
