James Hardie Fence Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

James Hardie fence installation in Los Angeles typically runs $4,130 – $10,620 installed, with most projects falling between $75 and $95 per linear foot depending on panel style, post spacing, and site access. We stock the common profiles and can usually match your existing panel dimensions within a week. Most Los Angeles homeowners call us after a fence section has been kicked loose, a post has rotted at the base from sprinkler overspray, or hardscape work cracked a panel, and they need to know whether they’re looking at a spot repair or a full run replacement.

James Hardie makes fiber cement siding and trim, so when homeowners say “James Hardie fence,” they almost always mean a modern horizontal-slat privacy screen or a mixed material fence built with HardiePanel vertical siding or HardieTrim boards mounted to a post and rail frame. The product itself is dense, rot-resistant, and dimensionally stable, which is why it’s become a popular alternative to wood in Los Angeles, where sun and dry rot chew through cedar in eight to ten years. But installation details matter more with fiber cement than with vinyl or wood, and a fence that was built wrong will show it fast.

By the way, Penhallow Remodeling Los Angeles is an independent contractor. We are not affiliated with James Hardie, and we don’t speak for their warranty. We do install their products every season, and we know which profiles hold up on a Los Angeles hillside and which ones warp when somebody skips the back priming step.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

Most James Hardie fence systems we see in Los Angeles are built from two product families: HardiePanel vertical siding (the 4×8 or 4×10 sheets, usually in Smooth or Cedarmill texture) and HardieTrim boards (5/4 by 4, 5/4 by 6, or 1×4 in select profiles). Some homeowners also use HardiePlank lap siding as a horizontal infill between posts, but that’s less common for full-fence runs and more common for a decorative screen wall attached to a patio or pool equipment area.

The fastest way to identify what you have is to pull a panel edge or check an exposed cut. HardiePanel that is 5/16 inch thick is standard for siding and interior soffit; 1/2 inch or 7/16 inch thick panels are rated for exterior vertical applications and are what a fence should be built from. If you find 1/4 inch panels on a fence, the original installer used the wrong product, and that’s why it’s cracking. HardieTrim boards come in 12-foot lengths, and genuine James Hardie trim carries “JH” or “HardieTrim” printed on the back face. If you don’t see the marking, it may be an off-brand fiber cement trim, which cuts and weathers differently.

We also come across fences that mix James Hardie panels with generic fiber cement from another manufacturer, usually because the original builder ran short and grabbed whatever was at the local lumberyard. The panels look close on a warehouse shelf, but once installed and painted, micro-differences in expansion rate show up as hairline cracks at the seams within two Los Angeles summers. Matching exactly matters.

Signs Your James Hardie Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Panels are pulling away from the post, leaving a visible gap. Fiber cement expands and contracts with temperature. In Los Angeles, a south facing fence can swing 90 degrees between a January morning and an August afternoon. If the installer butted panels tight to the post instead of leaving a proper 1/8-inch expansion gap, the panel edges shear the fasteners or crack at the corner.
  • Bottom edges are swelling, flaking, or turning dark. Fiber cement wicks moisture if it sits in direct contact with soil, grass, or standing water from sprinklers. The fix is usually trimming the panel up and adding a drip edge or gravel line, not replacing the whole fence.
  • Fastener heads are popping through the paint, or the panel face has a wave in it. This points to nails instead of screws, or screws driven too deep and shattering the back face of the panel. Fiber cement doesn’t hold a stripped nail hole. The panel eventually works loose and rattles against the frame when the Santa Anas blow.
  • Seams between panels have opened into a visible vertical gap. Unpainted panel edges absorb moisture, freeze, and expand. In Los Angeles we don’t get freezing cycles often, but we do get irrigation spray and morning fog, and edges that were never sealed will swell anyway. Once the seam opens, the panel behind it starts taking on water.
  • The whole fence section leans, while the panels themselves look fine. That’s usually the post, not the James Hardie product. A 4×4 pressure-treated post set in clay will shift over a few wet winters. We replace the post and rehang the existing panels if they’re still sound, which saves the homeowner the cost of new material.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Los Angeles homeowners can expect to spend on James Hardie fence installation right now:

  • Spot repair or single panel replacement: $295 – $825, depending on whether we’re reusing the existing post and frame or setting a new post.
  • Partial fence section, 10 – 20 linear feet: $1,180 – $2,950, including new panels, trim, hardware, and paint-ready prep.
  • Full fence replacement, 50 – 75 linear feet: $4,130 – $10,620, with the higher end covering site work, retaining or decorative posts, privacy obscuring plant removal, and demolition of the old fence.
  • Screening wall or decorative panel system: $2,360 – $7,670, which is more common for pool equipment enclosures, AC condenser screens, and patio privacy panels than for property-perimeter fencing.

What moves the number up or down: linear footage, panel texture and thickness, how many old posts need to be pulled and re-set, whether the fence sits on a slope or in a hard-to-access side yard, and whether you want paint-grade or prefinished ColorPlus panels. We always write the price before we start, with the materials and labor broken out so you can see exactly what you’re paying for. Every Penhallow fence project carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if something fails inside the guarantee window, we come back and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Cutting and installing fiber cement panels is not a casual Saturday project. The dust contains crystalline silica, and running a circular saw through HardiePanel without a proper dust collection setup puts fine particles into your lungs and your neighbor’s yard. We use HEPA-equipped saws and water suppression on Los Angeles job sites as a matter of course. You can safely inspect your fence: look for soil contact at the bottom edge, check panel gaps, and see whether sprinkler heads are spraying the fence every morning. What you should not do is pull off a cracked panel, cut a replacement freehand, and screw it back on without the right blade, clearance gaps, and edge sealing. The panel won’t fail immediately. It will fail around month seven, after the first big temperature swing, and you’ll be out the cost of the material and the afternoon.

Trevor Nash will tell you the same thing at a walkthrough: “Give you a number first, then pick up the tools.” Call (213) 277-6578 and we’ll come look at the fence, measure what’s there, and hand you a written price before anything gets cut.
