James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
James Hardie bathroom remodeling in Los Angeles typically runs $10,620 – $33,040 when you’re replacing failed HardieBacker board, redoing a shower surround, or rebuilding a bathroom around James Hardie’s cement-board substrate. Most homeowners discover the problem the same way: grout lines cracking in a stair-step pattern, tile popping loose, or a soft spot in the wall behind the shower valve. We stock HardieBacker in the two thicknesses that matter (1/2″ for walls, 1/4″ for floors and countertops) on our trucks most weeks, and we can usually start a HardieBacker-related bathroom repair within a few days of the site visit. If you’re in Los Angeles and you can push a tile with your thumb and feel it flex, the board behind it has likely lost its bond or absorbed moisture for too long.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

For bathroom work we’re talking almost entirely about James Hardie’s HardieBacker cement board lines: the original 1/2″ HardieBacker board, the 1/4″ HardieBacker board for floors and tub decks, and HydroDefense, which is Hardie’s waterproof board that doesn’t require a separate moisture barrier behind it. The compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of Los Angeles homeowners is this: HydroDefense and standard HardieBacker are not interchangeable in the same wall assembly. If any part of your existing shower used standard board with a plastic moisture barrier behind it, you don’t patch a section with HydroDefense and call it done. It will trap moisture between the two systems and fail again. We also see James Hardie siding used as an exterior bathroom wall sheathing in some of the older hillside homes, but that’s a different animal from the interior board work.
The honest answer on OEM versus aftermarket: James Hardie doesn’t authorize independent fabricators, and Penhallow Remodeling Los Angeles is an independent remodeling company, not affiliated with James Hardie. But for interior bathroom substrate, “OEM” mostly matters as a spec, not a brand stamp. HardieBacker board itself is the OEM product, and we install it in the thicknesses Hardie specifies for each application. The substitute materials we sometimes see, generic fiber-cement board or gypsum-based water-resistant board, are cheaper by $8 – $12 per sheet and fail dramatically faster in a wet Los Angeles bathroom with poor ventilation.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Tile grout cracking in a stair-step pattern down the wall. That’s the board moving behind it, usually because it wasn’t screwed on the proper 8-inch grid, or the studs behind it were wet when it went up.
- A soft spot low on the wall near the tub or shower pan. Water has been wicking up from the pan edge. HardieBacker handles moisture, but it isn’t magic: a continuously wet seam will eventually transfer moisture to the framing.
- Caulk peeling away from the tub or shower base within a year. The substrate is moving or the caulk was applied over a wet seam. In Los Angeles’s dry-wet cycles, this is the most common early warning sign.
- Grout turning dark in patches along the bottom course of tile. Efflorescence or mold working through the grout means the board behind it is saturated and not drying out between uses.
- Tile that sounds hollow when you tap it. The thinset has lost its bond with the board face, often because the board was dusty from cutting and never wiped down before tile went on.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A full James Hardie bathroom remodel in Los Angeles runs $10,620 – $33,040. At the lower end, you’re talking about swapping out a shower surround: gut the wet wall, hang new HardieBacker, waterproof the seams, re-tile. At the upper end, you’re looking at a full gut-and-rebuild bathroom where we’re replacing the floor board, the shower walls, the tub deck, and the vanity substrate before new tile, fixtures, and cabinetry go in. The single biggest cost driver is how far the water damage traveled behind the board, because failed board often hides softened studs and a rotted subfloor. Second is tile choice: standard 4×4 ceramic runs $5 – $12 per square foot for materials, while large-format porcelain or natural stone can push $30 – $60 per square foot before installation. We write every Los Angeles bathroom quote as a line-item number: board, waterproofing, tile, labor, disposal. That number does not change once we open the wall unless we find damage we could not reasonably have seen, and even then we stop and show you before we spend another dollar.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect what you have. Tap your tile with a quarter; if it sounds hollow, you’ve learned something useful. Look behind the shower valve access panel if you have one; you’ll see the board edge and whether it’s crumbling. But replacing HardieBacker is not a weekend repair. The board is 90 pounds per sheet for the 3×5 panels, the cuts create silica dust that requires a proper respirator, and if you hang it wrong, you won’t know until the tile cracks six months later. Trevor Nash says it plainly at every walkthrough: “Give you a number first, then pick up the tools.” We’re happy to do the first part even if you decide to do the second part yourself. But if you want it done once, call us at (213) 277-6578 and we’ll put a written price in your hand before any tile comes down.
FAQs

A properly installed HardieBacker shower wall should last 30 to 50 years in a ventilated Los Angeles bathroom. The board itself doesn’t rot, but the seams and screw points are only as good as the waterproofing over them. Poor ventilation shortens that lifespan to about a decade. Call (213) 277-6578 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your board is worth saving.
Sometimes, if the failure is caught early and limited to one wall section, we can cut out the damaged area and re-board that section with proper seam treatment. If the water has reached the studs or the shower pan, the math usually favors a full wet-area rebuild. We’ll show you the damage before recommending either path.
A shower surround replacement with new HardieBacker takes 5 to 7 working days including tile cure time. A full bathroom gut and rebuild runs two to three weeks. We’ll give you a written schedule with your written price, and if we’re going to be late, you’ll know before the morning of.
We keep 1/2″ and 1/4″ HardieBacker on our trucks, along with HydroDefense for full waterproof shower builds. For larger Los Angeles jobs we pull from local supply yards the same week, which keeps the schedule tight. If you need KraftMaid vanities, Cambria, or Silestone countertops to finish the job, we source those from recognized trade suppliers as well.
