Barrette Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We carry Barrette-compatible edging, paver restraints, and driveway border parts for Los Angeles homeowners, and a full replacement or paver border install typically runs $826 – $2,950 depending on linear footage, existing substrate condition, and whether we’re salvaging the old pavers or starting fresh. Most jobs are done in a single day once we’ve got the parts on site. Owners usually discover a failed Barrette part the hard way: a paver shifts under a tire, an edge restraint pops up after a heavy rain, or the driveway line that used to be straight now wanders into the lawn by three inches.

We’ve worked on Barrette edging and paver restraint systems across Los Angeles, from Sherman Oaks to Westchester, and the failure pattern is almost always the same: the plastic or aluminum spike has sheared off below grade, the restraint strip has cracked from UV exposure, or the paver base under the edge has washed out. Parts are replaceable. The driveway doesn’t need to be torn out. But matching the right part to the right Barrette series matters more than most homeowners expect.

Penhallow Remodeling Los Angeles is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Barrette Outdoor Living, but we install and source parts that fit their edging and paver restraint systems every week.

Which Barrette Models This Applies To

Barrette makes paver edging and restraint products under a few distinct lines, and the part numbers are not interchangeable the way you’d hope. The most common we see on Los Angeles driveways are the Barrette Structural Paver Edging (the rigid aluminum or steel profile with pre-punched spike holes) and the Barrette Flexible Coil Edging (a lighter polyethylene strip that bends around curved borders). Some patios and pool decks use their ProFlex line, which has a different spike spacing than the structural series.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: the spike holes on the Structural line are spaced at roughly 6 inches on center, while the ProFlex line runs closer to 4 inches. If you try to reuse old spikes on a new strip, or vice versa, you’ll end up with a restraint that’s not actually holding the paver. We match the part by measuring the existing spike spacing and checking the profile shape against the old strip before ordering anything.

On OEM versus aftermarket for Barrette specifically: the OEM strips are fine, but we’ve seen better lifespan from aftermarket aluminum restraint profiles in Los Angeles simply because our UV exposure and soil moisture cycles are harder on plastics. Anodized aluminum doesn’t get brittle the way polyethylene does after six or seven summers. The tradeoff is cost, and we’ll quote both so you can decide.

Signs Your Barrette Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Pavers spreading at the driveway edge. The restraint strip has either cracked or the spikes have pulled loose. Once the edge is free, the whole field of pavers starts drifting outward a fraction at a time under car tires.
  • A visible black or silver strip poking up past the paver tops. Frost heave isn’t the usual culprit here in Los Angeles; it’s typically soil expansion from irrigation overspray or root growth from a nearby tree pushing the strip upward.
  • The border no longer follows a straight or smooth curved line. This is the restraint failing in sections. One section still holds, the next has let go, and the driveway edge now has a wobble you can see from the street.
  • Gaps opening between edge pavers and the lawn or planter bed. When the substrate (the compacted base layer under the pavers) washes out near the edge, the restraint loses its anchor. You’re seeing the aftermath of erosion, not just a loose paver.
  • Sagging or dipping at the driveway apron. The edge restraint has failed and water has been getting under the paver base. Every rain cycle compounds it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled primary suite with built-in wardrobes and a window seat

For Barrette-compatible paver edging and restraint replacement in Los Angeles, we quote installed prices that typically fall between $826 and $2,950. The spread comes down to three things: linear footage of the border being replaced, whether the existing base material needs to be re-compacted or replenished, and whether we’re resetting the original pavers or installing new ones. A straight 40-foot driveway edge with solid base and reusable pavers lands at the low end. A 120-foot curved border with washed-out base and root intrusion lands at the high end.

Every quote is written and includes the demo of the failed Barrette parts, haul-off of the old restraint, any base repair needed, the new edging, spikes, and the resetting of your pavers. The number on the quote is the number on the invoice, period. And the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the edge fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing on every job we do in Los Angeles.

We also stock parts for other brands you might have on the same property: KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone, for when a kitchen or bath is next on the list.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself before calling. Pull back the grass or mulch at the failing section and look at the strip. If it’s cracked or the spike has sheared off, that confirms the part failed, not the pavers. You can also run a hose along the edge to see if drainage from your landscaping is washing the base away. Those observations help us quote accurately over the phone.

Where DIY goes sideways on this job is the base compaction. If you replace the strip but don’t re-compact the base at the edge, the new restraint will fail again inside a year or two, and you’ll be buying the same part twice. Trevor Nash has been on residential jobs across the Basin long enough to tell you plainly: he’ll give you a number first, then pick up the tools. If you’d rather not do this twice, call (213) 277-6578 and we’ll schedule a look.
