Tamko Fence Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Tamko fence installation in Los Angeles typically runs $4,130 to $10,620 for a complete project, materials and labor included. We install Tamko composite and vinyl fence lines the same week we measure, and we carry the mounting hardware, post caps, and gate kits that tend to fail first. Most owners call us after a post shifts or a gate sags and they realize the original installer skipped the concrete footing depth our soil actually needs. The good news is a failed section doesn’t usually mean the whole fence has to come down. We can often match the existing Tamko profile and replace only the damaged run.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To
Tamko’s fence product line splits into two broad families: the composite Heritage line and the vinyl Envision series. The Heritage boards run thicker, roughly 0.95 inches, with a wood-grain finish molded into the surface. Envision panels are lighter, closer to 0.75 inches, and come in narrower slat profiles. Before we quote a repair, we check the back of a picket or the inside face of a rail for the Tamko stamp and the color code. That stamp matters more than people think. Tamko changed their color formulations around 2018, and a “Weathered Cedar” panel from 2016 won’t match a 2023 panel of the same name under direct Los Angeles sun. We flag that compatibility issue up front, because the last thing you want is half a fence that looks like it came from two different yards. For replacement boards, we use genuine Tamko material when it’s still in production and sourced through our trade suppliers. When a color is discontinued, we work with the homeowner to pick a quality aftermarket match or a complementary two-tone layout rather than pretending the deadstock exists.

Signs Your Tamko Fence Installation Is Failing
- Posts leaning at the gate opening. This is almost always a footing problem, not a post problem. In Los Angeles, the culprit is usually the hardpan clay in neighborhoods like Mid-City or the sandy loam out toward the Valley. A post hole dug 18 inches deep with a bag of quick-set poured around it will shift within two or three seasons. We set posts at 24 to 30 inches with a wider bell-shaped footing so the post doesn’t become a lever.
- Rails pulling away from the post brackets. Tamko rails slide into routed holes in the posts. Once the bracket screws strip or the rail end cracks, the whole line loses its tension. You’ll see a visible gap where the rail should seat flush.
- Gate dragging across the ground or latching at the wrong height. This is the most common call. The hinge screws loosen from wind loading, the gate pulls the post out of plumb, and suddenly it won’t close without lifting the latch side. Sometimes a simple hinge replacement fixes it, but usually the post footing needs re-done.
- Pickets warping or bowing in direct afternoon sun. Composite and vinyl both expand and contract more than people expect in our heat. If the original installer buried the picket ends against the bottom rail with no expansion gap, you get buckling in August and shrinkage gaps in January.
- White chalky residue running down the bottom rail. On older vinyl, that’s plasticizer leaching out after years of UV exposure. It doesn’t mean the fence is about to collapse, but it does mean the material has lost flexibility and will crack rather than bend if a branch hits it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Tamko fence installation in Los Angeles runs $4,130 to $10,620 depending on linear footage, terrain, access, and how much of the old fence needs hauling away. A partial repair, like rebuilding one gate and resetting two posts, usually lands between $900 and $2,400. The bigger cost drivers are grade. If your yard slopes, every panel needs to step down, which takes longer to set and eats more material. If the ground is heavy clay, we spend extra time on footings because a post that moves in year two is a callback neither of us wants.
Every estimate includes the line-item cost of the Tamko boards, rails, posts, concrete, hardware, and the labor to set, level, and haul away debris. No change orders at the door. The written number covers what we agreed to, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise says if anything shifts, sags, or cracks inside the first year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s in writing on every fence job we do.
DIY or Call Us?
A fence isn’t a live electrical panel or a tensioned garage spring, but it’s not as forgiving as it looks either. You can safely check a few things yourself: look for gaps where rails meet posts, check whether the gate moves if you push it sideways, and run a level against the posts. What you shouldn’t do is try to reset a post in Los Angeles soil without knowing how deep to dig or what your drainage looks like. A shallow footing will hold long enough for the fence to look fixed, then fail again when the winter rain softens the ground. We’ve pulled up posts set by well-meaning homeowners that were barely 14 inches deep with a half-pour of concrete around them. FAQs

A properly installed Tamko composite or vinyl fence lasts 20 to 30 years in our climate, with the main wear coming from UV exposure and soil movement rather than rot or insects. The failure we see first on older installs is almost never the product, it’s the post footing.
Yes, in most cases a section repair or gate rebuild is enough. We only recommend full replacement when the rails and pickets are cracking across wide areas or the posts have heaved so badly that the fence line can’t be straightened. Call (213) 277-6578 and we’ll tell you which side of the line you’re on.
A typical 60 to 100 foot backyard fence takes two to three working days from demo to cleanup. Larger jobs with significant grade changes or old concrete removal can run three to five days. We give a written arrival window before we start, and the crew uniforms and background checks apply on fence jobs the same as every remodel.
We stock common Tamko rail brackets, post caps, and gate hinge kits on the truck, and we can usually source full boards and posts from our Los Angeles suppliers within a few days. On the same trip we also keep parts for the other brands we work with, like KraftMaid cabinetry hardware and Cambria and Silestone quartz accessories, but fence hardware is the one we reach for most on these calls.
If your Tamko fence is leaning, sagging, or cracked and you want a number before anyone picks up a tool, call (213) 277-6578. We’ll schedule the free estimate, measure the run, and hand you a written price with the guarantee attached.
