Tamko Roofing: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We install and repair Tamko-brand asphalt shingles and roofing systems across Los Angeles, with most storm, heat, or impact repairs falling between $470 and $2,125 installed depending on the scope. If you’re reading this, odds are you spotted a curled shingle tab after a Santa Ana blow, found granules collecting in your rain gutters after last winter’s atmospheric river, or noticed a soft, spongy spot near a chimney flashing. That’s usually how Tamko owners first learn their roof has a problem: not with a dramatic leak, but with a small, nagging sign that something isn’t right up there. The good news is most Tamko failures we see are repairable before they become a full roof replacement, as long as they’re caught early.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To

The Tamko product line breaks into a few main families you’ll want to identify before calling anyone. The Heritage series is what we see most often on Los Angeles homes built or re-roofed in the last 15 years – a laminated architectural shingle that carries a 30-year limited warranty and handles Southern California sun reasonably well. Tamko’s Titan XT line, with its wider nailing zone and higher wind rating, shows up on newer construction and homes in the San Fernando Valley where Santa Ana gusts push 50 to 70 mph through the passes. There are also the 3-tab and Elite Glass lines, which we still find on older track homes in the Crenshaw district, Leimert Park, and parts of the South Bay.
Here’s a compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Tamko shingles have a specific nailing strip location and adhesive pattern that changes between series and even between production years. A bundle of Heritage from 2012 is not always a clean color or dimension match for Heritage manufactured in 2022. Tamko color names also drift over time – what they called “Weathered Wood” a decade ago may sit a shade or two off today’s run. That’s why we always pull a shingle sample and match against the current Tamko color cards before quoting any repair. We are an independent Los Angeles contractor, not a Tamko affiliate, which means we stock genuine Tamko components and can also source quality aftermarket underlayment, flashing, and ridge cap that meet or exceed the original spec when that’s the better value for you. Tamko is one of the roofing lines we work with regularly, alongside other trade materials we source from brands like KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for interior projects.

Signs Your Tamko Roofing Is Failing
- Curling or cupping shingle tabs. In Los Angeles, the sun is relentless. Ultraviolet exposure breaks down the asphalt’s oils over 15 to 20 years, and the tabs start to lift at the edges. Once they curl, wind gets under them and starts peeling them off, one by one.
- Granule loss collecting in gutters. Run your hand along the gutter when it’s dry. If you find a layer of gritty, sand-like granules, your shingles are shedding their protective layer. This is the first true sign the shingle is aging out, even if it looks okay from the street.
- A soft spot on a flush, walkable roofline. Water intrusion rots the plywood or OSB sheathing beneath the shingle. Press gently with the heel of your hand. If it gives way, the decking has been wet for a while, and the repair scope just got bigger than a shingle swap.
- Nail pops or exposed fasteners. When shingles shift or a poor original install left nails not fully seated, those fasteners back out and become little water funnels. The fix is quick, but only if the surrounding shingle is still pliable enough to re-seal.
- Staining on the underside of the roof deck, visible in the attic. This is where we see leaks that never made it into the living space yet. A dark water stain near a vent boot or valley is the quiet warning sign before the ceiling stains appear.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Los Angeles homeowners, Tamko roof repair work on this class of issue typically runs $470 to $2,125. That range covers a simple shingle replacement and re-seal on the low end, up to a larger repair like replacing a section of damaged decking, installing new underlayment, and re-shingling a broad repair area with matched Tamko product. The biggest driver is whether the substrate beneath the shingle has stayed dry or gone soft – once you’re pulling and replacing sheathing, the materials and labor step up. You’ll get a written price before any work starts, with the parts and labor separated out so you know exactly what you’re paying for. That written number holds. And every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within the year, we come back and fix it at no charge, including the return visit. No re-inspection fee, no back-and-forth.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things you can safely do on a single-story home with a shallow pitch: inspect your gutters for granules, take dated photos of curling tabs from the ground or a ladder set properly against the fascia, and check your attic for stains. That information helps us quote accurately over the phone. What you shouldn’t do is walk a two-story Los Angeles roof over a rafter gap without fall protection, or start prying up Tamko shingles to “take a look.” The adhesive strips are pressure-activated, and once you break the seal, that shingle is compromised until it’s properly replaced. Steep roofs and heights turn a simple repair into a serious fall risk. Call us at (213) 277-6578 for a free estimate and we’ll handle the roof so you don’t have to leave the ladder.
FAQs

Plan on 18 to 25 years of useful life from a Tamko architectural shingle in Los Angeles, even though the warranty says 30. Our sun, the dry heat, and the repeated thermal expansion between our cool nights and hot afternoons age shingles faster than in milder climates, and that’s a reality we budget for on every quote.
If your roof is at the 20-year mark and showing granule loss, call (213) 277-6578 and we’ll give you an honest assessment on what’s left of the roof’s service life.
Most isolated failures can be repaired without replacing the whole roof. If the shingles around the problem area still flex without cracking and the decking underneath is solid, a targeted repair is the right call. Roof replacement only becomes necessary when the failure covers a large area or the decking has widespread rot.
We’ll tell you straight which path fits your roof. Call (213) 277-6578 for an inspection and a written quote either way.
A basic shingle or flashing repair runs two to four hours on site. If we’re pulling and replacing rotted decking, that pushes into a full day, sometimes a day and a half if the weather isn’t cooperating. You’ll get a defined arrival window before we come out, and we leave the job site clean when we’re done.
We keep common Tamko repair materials on hand in Los Angeles – starter strips, ridge cap, sealant, flashing, and color samples across the Heritage and Titan XT lines. For anything outside our regular stock, which does happen with older color runs, we can usually have the exact match in hand within 48 hours. Trevor Nash grew up in the Crenshaw district watching his uncle re-frame doorways in the bungalows nearby, and the habit stuck: give you a number first, then pick up the tools.
