Sterling Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Sterling-compatible driveway pavers across Los Angeles, with most replacements running $8,260 – $21,240 installed depending on square footage, paver thickness, and what’s happening underneath the surface. Most owners discover a problem the same way: a paver shifts under a car tire, a low spot starts holding water after rain, or a section settles so badly the garage apron looks like a staircase. We keep common Sterling profiles on hand, and our crew can usually have a failed section pulled, the base re-compacted, and new pavers set within one to two working days.

Sterling pavers are not the issue in most failures we see. It’s the base. Los Angeles soil is a particular beast: dense clay in some pockets, sandy loam in others, and a rainy season that arrives all at once. When the base under pavers erodes or was never compacted to spec, the pavers above it crack, sink, or spread. We’ll get into that below, but the short version is this: the paver is rarely the root cause. The preparation underneath it usually is.

Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling’s driveway paver line runs through three main profiles: the classic 60mm rectangle (often sold as a 4×8 or 6×9 unit), the 80mm heavy-duty paver rated for vehicular traffic, and a permeable option built with wider joints for drainage. If your driveway was poured with standard 60mm pavers and you now park a heavier vehicle on it regularly, that’s a compatibility problem waiting to surface. An 80mm paver has roughly 33% more structural thickness, and that matters when a concrete truck or a loaded work van rolls over it.

How to identify what you have: flip a loose paver and look for the mold stamp on the bottom face. Sterling stamps include a series code and a date code, usually in a 2-line format. If the stamp has worn off, measure the paver thickness with a tape. 60mm is about 2-3/8 inches; 80mm is just over 3-1/8. The distinction matters because an aftermarket 80mm paver will never sit flush in a 60mm field, and vice versa. For Sterling specifically, we recommend OEM or a same-spec replacement from a recognized trade brand like Belgard or Unilock when matching color and chamfer profile, since Sterling’s color blends shift from lot to lot. A mismatched paver stands out for years.

One more thing worth knowing: Sterling’s permeable line uses a different joint aggregate than their standard pavers. If you mix them, the drainage performance drops and water starts pooling where it didn’t before. We’ve seen that exact mistake on at least half a dozen driveways in Los Angeles, usually after a homeowner or a handyman “just replaced the cracked ones.”

Signs Your Sterling Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • One paver sits higher than its neighbors. That’s a base failure underneath it, not a paver defect. Water has found its way into the bedding sand and washed it out, or tree roots have pushed up from below. The paver didn’t move; the ground beneath it did.
  • Standing water in one section after rain. A properly pitched paver driveway drains in minutes, not hours. Puddles that linger mean the base has settled unevenly and the pitch is gone. In Los Angeles, where we get most of our rain in a few intense storms, this tends to accelerate erosion underneath the pavers with every storm cycle.
  • Edging is separating or tilting outward. The edge restraint keeps the field locked together. When it fails, pavers start creeping toward the lawn or the street. You’ll see a widening gap at the border first, then a wave pattern in the field.
  • Sand is washing out of the joints after rain. A small amount of joint sand loss is normal over a few years. But if you can see channels or trenches forming in the joints after a storm, water is running through the joint system instead of over it, and it’s taking the sand with it.
  • Efflorescence or white haze that won’t go away. Some white bloom on new concrete pavers is normal and fades with weather. But persistent white deposits years after installation usually mean water is being wicked up through the paver from below, a sign the drainage layer under the base is not doing its job.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in shower with large-format tile and a built-in niche

In Los Angeles, a Sterling-compatible paver driveway replacement runs from $8,260 for a smaller single-car apron to $21,240 for a full two-car driveway with heavier 80mm pavers and a full base rebuild. The range is driven by square footage, paver thickness, access for our equipment, and whether we’re pulling and reusing any existing pavers or laying all new material.

Every estimate includes the same line items: demolition and haul-away of the failed section, excavation to the correct depth for the paver spec, geotextile fabric, compacted aggregate base, bedding sand, the pavers themselves, joint sand and compaction, and edge restraint. We put the price in writing before any work starts, so the number on day one is the number on the invoice. And the work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something shifts or settles inside a year because of how we built it, we come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect a few things yourself: look for standing water, check whether edge restraints have come loose, and mark any pavers that rock when you step on them. That helps us quote faster when you call.

But pulling and resetting driveway pavers is not a weekend project for most homeowners. The base compaction alone requires a plate compactor, and getting the pitch right so water drains away from the house is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that fails again after the next storm. We have watched homeowners pull pavers, dump bagged sand in the hole, and put everything back, only to have the same sag return six months later because the base was never addressed. You won’t catch a broken bone doing this, but you will likely waste a weekend and a few hundred dollars on material that has to be pulled back out. Give us a call at (213) 277-6578 and we’ll tell you honestly whether the whole drive needs a rebuild or just a repair. Give you a number first, then pick up the tools.
