Sterling Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Sterling bathroom remodeling in Los Angeles typically runs $10,620 – $33,040 for a full or partial bathroom update, and we can usually start the parts discussion the same day you call. Most Los Angeles homeowners contact us because one specific Stirling component failed: a cracked tub surround panel, a wall set that separated at the seam, or a shower base that developed a slow, persistent leak at the drain or the corners. They already know their bathroom is a Sterling, they know the part that failed, and they want a straight answer on matching it, pricing it, and getting it installed without the rest of the bathroom coming apart. That’s the page you’re on.

Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling makes bathroom products in a handful of families that are easy to confuse, and getting the wrong one is the most common parts mistake we see in Los Angeles homes. The big three are Ensemble (the interlocking wall set with the tongue-and-groove seams), Performa (a step-up series with deeper shelves and a slightly different drain placement), and Accord (a budget line often installed in rental units and flipped houses, with thinner, more flexible wall panels). Each series has its own drain assembly geometry and its own wall panel dimensions, so an Ensemble wall kit will not seat properly on an Accord base, even though both look white and measure close to the same at a glance.

To identify yours, look for a label on the underside of the shower base or on the back of the valve access panel. It will list the series name and a numeric model. If the label is gone, measure the base lip where the wall panels sit: Ensemble bases have a 3/8-inch receiving channel, Performa runs slightly wider, and Accord panels are noticeably flimsier at the edges. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: on Sterling specifically, we lean OEM when the part is a drain assembly, a wall panel, or a receptor (the molded base), because Sterling’s tolerances are tight and aftermarket bases rarely line up with factory wall sets. Aftermarket trim plates, grab bars, and escutcheons are fine. Penhallow Remodeling Los Angeles is an independent contractor, not a Sterling dealer or affiliate, and we order direct or through trade supply houses depending on lead time.

Signs Your Sterling Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Seam separation between wall panels. This is the number one Sterling failure we see in Los Angeles, and it’s almost always thermal: homes without air conditioning in the Valley or inland let the bathroom swing 30 degrees between night and morning, and the tongue-and-groove seams walk themselves apart over years. Water gets behind the panels and rots the drywall or framing behind.
  • Soft spots at the shower base corners. A flexing base usually means the mortar bed underneath was never fully set, or it cracked. Every step flexes the gelcoat until it crazes, and then water finds the weep holes and never leaves.
  • A slow leak at the drain that never fully stops. Sterling’s factory drain gaskets get brittle with age and hard water in Los Angeles. Tightening them usually makes it worse. The gasket needs replacing, not cranking.
  • Cracks radiating from the drain opening. These are stress cracks from the base flexing around a rigid drain. Once the crack reaches the drain flange, the receptor is done. Patching gelcoat over an active flex crack will fail again within months.
  • Mold or efflorescence at the base-to-wall joint. White mineral trails or dark staining at the bottom seam tell you water has been running behind the wall for a while, and the wall set needs to come down to see what’s left of the substrate behind it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, replacing the failed part of a Sterling bathroom setup lands in one of three tiers. A single wall panel replacement with seam sealing runs roughly $1,200 – $3,400 installed. Swapping a damaged receptor (shower base) is $2,400 – $5,900 because the bottom rows of wall panel have to come off, the old base gets cut out, and a new mortar bed goes down. A full Sterling Ensemble or Performa kit replacement, with all walls and the base, falls into the $6,000 – $12,500 range when done as part of a partial bathroom remodel. The full bathroom remodel figure of $10,620 – $33,040 covers the whole room: flooring, vanity, fixtures, lighting, and the tub or shower system.

What drives the number up is access (second-floor Los Angeles bathrooms with narrow stairwells cost more in labor), water damage hidden behind the failed part (we price the repair once we see the framing), and whether you want us to upgrade the valve while the wall is open. What holds it down is a clean removal, a standard drain location, and no surprises. Every Penhallow job carries a written price before any work starts, and the installed parts and labor fall under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge, and if a repair fails after we’ve left, the second visit is free. No service call, no re-inspection fee.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely identify your Sterling series from the label or the base lip measurement, take photos of the seams and the drain, and shut off water to the bathroom if the leak is active. That preparation genuinely helps. What you shouldn’t do is pull a Sterling wall panel yourself if the seam has separated: the panels interlock under tension, and forcing one off usually cracks the next panel in line, turning a $300 panel replacement into a $2,000 wall set replacement. Same goes for the drain: Sterling’s factory drain nut is under the base, and if the base is bedded in mortar, you can’t get to it without cutting into the subfloor or the ceiling below. If the failure is a seam, a crack, or a drain on a bedded base, call us at (213) 277-6578 before you start prying. The free estimate costs you nothing, and it tells you exactly what you’re dealing with.
