Schluter Kitchen Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you’re searching for Schluter kitchen remodeling in Los Angeles, you likely have a failed Schluter membrane, edge profile, or waterproofing concern, and you need someone who actually knows the system rather than someone who’ll call it “that orange stuff.” We install and repair Schluter-Ditra, Kerdi, and Kerdi-Board across Los Angeles, with full kitchen remodels typically running $16,520 – $53,100 depending on cabinet line, countertop material, and layout changes. Most owners discover a Schluter failure the same way: a dark stain bleeding through grout, a loose edge profile in a doorway, tile that sounds hollow when you knock, or water pooling at the base of a cabinet toe kick. Left alone, these symptoms travel – water moves along the substrate and finds the drywall, the subfloor, and the cabinetry underneath.
We’re an independent Los Angeles contractor, not a Schluter affiliate, and we’ve been working with their products long enough to know both what they do well and where installations in Southern California specifically tend to go wrong. If you want a straight answer about whether your Schluter issue is a patch job or a section replacement, call (213) 277-6578 and we’ll talk through what you’re seeing. The estimate is free and written.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes three main products you’ll find in a Los Angeles kitchen: Ditra (the uncoupling membrane under tile floors), Kerdi (the waterproofing membrane behind tile on walls and backsplashes), and Kerdi-Board (the foam board substrate for counters and wall assemblies). Each has different compatibility issues when something fails, and no single part swaps across all of them.
Ditra comes in two common thicknesses – the standard 1/8″ mat and Ditra-XL at 5/16″ – plus Ditra-Heat with the cable channels built in. If your floor tile is cracking or shifting, you need to know which one is under it before anyone pulls up a tile. Kerdi has its own seam band, corners, and pipe collars; mixing those with aftermarket waterproofing materials voids the system’s performance, and Schluter’s warranty won’t cover it. Kerdi-Board comes in thicknesses from 3/8″ to 2″, and guessing wrong there means your countertop overhang or cabinet alignment changes. Here’s the gotcha most Los Angeles homeowners hit: Schluter products only work as a system. A section of Kerdi membrane with off-brand thinset, or Ditra seam taped with the wrong product, is technically no longer a Schluter installation at all. OEM parts are the safe route; aftermarket equivalents are rare for genuine waterproofing components, and in a kitchen remodel, the parts cost is small compared to pulling everything back out.
Trevor Nash, who founded Penhallow Remodeling Los Angeles, learned the compatibility details the slow way – opening up failed installs around the Basin and seeing exactly where a shortcut happened. Give you a number first, then pick up the tools.

Signs Your Schluter Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout cracks along the floor near cabinets or the island. This usually means the Ditra underlayment wasn’t fully bonded to the subfloor, or the subfloor itself is flexing. Tile is rigid; Ditra absorbs movement, but only if the substrate below it is solid.
- A hollow sound when you tap the tile. This points to voids in the thinset between tile and membrane. In Los Angeles, rapid temperature swings between hot dry summers and cooler wet winters can accelerate debonding, especially on exterior-adjacent kitchen walls and sunlit floor areas.
- Dark staining or moisture at the base of cabinets or the toe kick. Water is finding a path past the Kerdi or Kerdi-Board layer. On a kitchen sink wall this is almost always a seam failure at the counter-to-backsplash transition, or an improperly sealed pipe collar.
- An edge profile pulling away from a doorway transition. Schluter profiles sit under the tile edge and are held by the mortar bed. If you can see the metal flange lifting, the tile edge was never properly bedded, or movement in the subfloor has broken the bond. It’s a tripping hazard and usually the first sign of a bigger floor problem.
- Tile heaving or tenting, especially after a hot stretch. Tenting is the classic uncoupling failure or expansion joint omission. We see it in Los Angeles kitchens with long unbroken tile runs and big south-facing windows that heat the floor unevenly.
The common thread: by the time a Schluter system shows one of these signs, water or movement has already had time to work. That’s why a “quick regrout” rarely fixes the underlying issue, and why we don’t sell one.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Schluter-specific kitchen remodeling in Los Angeles runs from $16,520 to $53,100 for a full kitchen, and smaller Schluter repairs like removing a section of failed Ditra, re-waterproofing a backsplash wall, or replacing a failed Kerdi seam typically run $2,360 to $7,670 depending on square footage, tile type, and how much of the system must come out to do it correctly. Here’s what moves the number:
- How far the failure has spread. A 4-square-foot repair is a one-day job; a full floor with saturated subfloor is a multi-week job.
- Whether the tile is replaceable. Some homeowners have discontinued tile and we have to feather in a matching material rather than start fresh.
- What’s underneath. A 1950s Los Angeles bungalow with a pier-and-beam foundation needs different floor prep than a 2005 slab-on-grade in the Valley.
- Whether cabinetry must be pulled. Water often follows the Schluter layer under the cabinets, and you can’t fix that without pulling the lowers.
Every replacement includes a written price before work starts, not a verbal range. We write the guarantee down too – the 365-Day Done Right Promise covers our installation work, so if something fails inside a year, we return and fix it at no charge. That includes the free return visit, no service call and no re-inspection fee.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do two things yourself: inspect visibly and stop the water. Look for cracked grout, loose profiles, and damp cabinet bases; if you see water actively seeping, shut off the supply line to the sink and sponge the area dry. Do not start pulling tile or cutting into Kerdi to “see how far it goes.” Waterproofing systems fail progressively, and once you open a seam or puncture the membrane, you’ve widened the repair zone and possibly voided what was still working.
Schluter work is not high-tension dangerous like garage springs, but it is systems dangerous – meaning a repair that looks fine for six weeks and then leaks again, usually worse. If you want the job done once with a written number and a guarantee behind it, call us at (213) 277-6578. We’ll come out, diagnose it, and give you a written estimate.
FAQs

A properly installed Schluter system should last 20 to 30 years in Los Angeles, with one local caveat: our seismic activity and dry-summer heat mean expansion gaps and subfloor movement joints matter more here than in stable-climate installs. Failures we see are almost always installation shortcuts, not product defects. Call (213) 277-6578 if you want an inspection for an existing install – it’s free.
Small, contained failures can often be section-repaired, especially if caught before water spreads under the mat. But once moisture reaches the seams and travels, patching becomes a temporary fix; we’ll tell you honestly which one you have. Estimates are free, so you’ll know the number before any commitment.
A small section replacement typically takes one to two days, including membrane bonding and cure time; a full kitchen remodel with Schluter underlayment, cabinetry, and counters runs four to eight weeks depending on scope. We give you a written schedule with a defined arrival window at the start.
Our technicians carry Ditra and Kerdi-Board materials, Kerdi seam tape, corner pieces, and Schluter edge profiles on the truck for common Los Angeles kitchen repair scenarios. We also stock cabinetry from KraftMaid, Cambria quartz, and Silestone surfaces for installations where the Schluter repair expands into a full kitchen rebuild.
If your Schluter kitchen remodel in Los Angeles is failing or you’re planning a new one, call (213) 277-6578 to schedule a free estimate. A real person answers, and you’ll get a written price before any work starts.
