Toto Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Toto bathroom remodeling in Los Angeles typically costs $10,620 – $33,040 depending on the scope, whether you’re keeping the existing fixture layout or moving plumbing, and which Toto models you’re pairing with new tile, glass, and cabinetry. Most Toto owners call us when a specific component fails: a fill valve that won’t shut off, a skirted toilet that rocks because the mounting flange rotted through, a Washlet seat that stopped heating, or tile that cracked around a Toto tub the original installer didn’t set on a proper mortar bed. You know your Toto works, which is why it’s frustrating when the bathroom around it doesn’t.

We’re an independent remodeling contractor, not a Toto factory service center. That said, we work on Toto-equipped bathrooms across Los Angeles every month, and we know these fixtures well enough to plan a remodel around them or rebuild the rough-in before the new tile goes in.

Which Toto Models This Applies To

Toto’s lineup spans everything from the entry-level Drake and Entrada to the skirted Aquia, Nexus, Carlyle II, and the Washlet-integrated Neorest series. The first thing that matters isn’t the model name on the lid. It’s whether the toilet is standard or skirted, because that one detail changes how the flange has to be set, how much floor repair is needed, and which wax rings actually seal. Skirted Totos hide the trapway behind a smooth porcelain panel, so the mounting bolts sit in recessed channels that don’t align with off-the-shelf flange repair kits. If the flange is even a quarter-inch out of spec, you get a slow leak that turns into subfloor rot under the tile.

The second compatibility gotcha is the rough-in. Toto builds 10-inch, 12-inch, and 14-inch rough-in toilets, and Los Angeles homes from the 1920s through the 1980s often have 14-inch rough-ins that a modern 12-inch Toto can’t sit on without an offset flange or a visible gap behind the tank. We measure this during the estimate, before any price is finalized. On the parts side, we’ll spec OEM Toto when it matters most (Washlet seats, flush valve towers, the G-Max or Tornado flush components) and quality aftermarket where it makes sense (fill valves, supply lines, wax-free seals). Some aftermarket fill valves are made by the same manufacturers Toto rebrands, and we’ll tell you when that savings is real and when it isn’t.

Signs Your Toto Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Water runs through the bowl without stopping. This is almost always the fill valve or the flush valve tower, and on Totos with the G-Max system, the rubber seal in the center of the tank degrades from Los Angeles’s hard water. The fix is usually a $30 – $60 part, but if it’s been running for months, the water bill has already cost more than the repair.
  • The toilet rocks or shifts when you sit. The flange is corroded, the floor beneath the tile is soft, or the original installer never shimmed a skirted Toto properly. Rocking breaks wax seals, and a broken seal leaks sewage-laced water into the subfloor every flush.
  • Tile cracks in a line near the tub or toilet base. Behind that crack is usually movement: a floor joist that flexes, a plywood subfloor that wasn’t thick enough for tile, or a Toto cast iron tub that wasn’t set in mortar and now shifts with weight.
  • The Washlet seat flashes an error code and won’t heat. Washlet electronics don’t like voltage spikes, and Los Angeles neighborhoods with older panels or frequent SCE outages see more of these failures. Check the GFCI outlet first; if the outlet is fine, the seat control board usually needs replacement.
  • You smell sewer gas near the toilet or tub. A dried-out or failed trap seal, a cracked vent pipe, or a flange that’s no longer making contact. This isn’t a “light a candle” situation. Sewer gas contains hydrogen sulfide, and chronic exposure isn’t something to ignore.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled hall bathroom with patterned floor tile and painted walls

Here’s the range in Los Angeles, laid out plainly:

Scope of Work Typical Los Angeles Price
Full bathroom remodel keeping Toto fixtures, new tile/vanity/glass $10,620 – $26,500
Full remodel plus moving plumbing or replacing the tub/shower $18,000 – $33,040
Small bathroom remodel (toilet area refresh, new floor, new vanity) $5,900 – $14,160
Walk-in shower installation (Toto tub removed, shower built) $5,310 – $14,160
Toilet replacement with flange repair and subfloor patch $1,180 – $3,540 (varies with subfloor damage found)

What drives the number up: moving the drain line, discovering rotted joists or a rusted cast iron stack once the floor opens, waterproofing upgrades (Schluter or cement board substrate, the moisture-resistant layer behind your tile), and tile or stone that requires specialized cutting. What drives it down: keeping the existing footprint, using a tub that drops into the current alcove, and choosing porcelain tile over natural stone. Every job gets a written price before we start, and that number is the number. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work in writing: if something fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. No re-inspection fee, no service call charge on a free return visit.

DIY or Call Us?

You can check a few things yourself. Confirm the GFCI outlet near a Washlet hasn’t tripped. Look for visible water at the base of the toilet after a flush. Listen for a hiss from the fill valve. Those checks take a minute and don’t require a wrench. Beyond that, I’d leave it to someone who does this every day. The most common DIY failure we see in Los Angeles is a homeowner who replaces a Toto fill valve with the wrong part (the standard Fluidmaster doesn’t always match Toto tank geometry), then strips the plastic lock nut, then calls us anyway after the tank leaks onto the floor they just refinished. On skirted Totos, removing the bowl without the right technique cracks the porcelain roughly one time in ten. Porcelain shards are not worth the hundred dollars you saved.

If you’re not sure what’s failing, or you just want the number before you decide anything, call (213) 277-6578. We’ll give you a price first, then pick up the tools. As Trevor Nash likes to put it: “Give you a number first, then pick up the tools.”
