American Standard Fence Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Fence installation for an American Standard fence line in Los Angeles typically runs $4,130 – $10,620 for a full perimeter job, depending on linear footage, post setting method, and whether we’re replacing rotted posts or starting fresh. Most Los Angeles owners call us when a gate starts dragging across concrete, a post has gone soft at the base from sprinkler overspray, or the fence pickets have started cupping in the dry heat. We stock American Standard-compatible fence hardware and materials on our trucks, and we’ll give you a written price before we pull a single post.

Here’s the thing about American Standard fencing: it’s built around galvanized steel post systems and factory-finished pickets that hold up better than untreated lumber, but the installation quality is what decides whether you get 8 years or 20 out of it. In Los Angeles, we see two recurring problems. First, posts set directly into clay-heavy soil without proper drainage backfill shift within two or three seasons. Second, gates hung on undersized hinges sag until they bind. Both are installation failures, not product failures. That’s good news, because installation is something you can control.

We’re an independent Los Angeles remodeling and installation company, not affiliated with American Standard. But we’ve installed enough of their fencing to know the product line cold, and we stand behind every job with the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing.

Which American Standard Models This Applies To

American Standard’s residential fencing line breaks into three series: the Classic Steel (basic galvanized posts with wood-look composite or vinyl pickets), the Decorative Aluminum line (lighter, more ornate, common for front-yard enclosures), and the Heavy-Duty Privacy Panel system used for backyards and side yards in Los Angeles neighborhoods like Encino, Sherman Oaks, and Torrance. Each series uses different post dimensions and gate hardware, and the parts don’t always cross over.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see constantly: the Classic Steel’s line posts are 2″ x 2″ galvanized steel, but the terminal and gate posts are 2.5″ x 2.5″. If you order the wrong post for a gate hinge, the hinge bolts stick out and the gate hangs crooked within a month. We measure every post before we order a single replacement part. Your fence will usually have a manufacturer label stamped inside the gate frame or on the bottom rail of a panel. If it’s worn off, we match by wall thickness and post cap style.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for structural posts and gate hinges, we buy American Standard OEM parts. The aftermarket hinges we’ve tested in Los Angeles don’t hold their powder coat in coastal salt air and they develop play at the barrel faster. For pickets and rails, a quality aftermarket equivalent from a local Los Angeles supplier is usually functionally identical and costs 20 – 30% less. We’ll give you the choice and tell you where the savings make sense and where they don’t.

Signs Your American Standard Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Gate drags or binds at the latch. This is almost never the latch itself. The hinge screws have pulled loose from the post, or the post itself has shifted out of plumb. If you have to lift the gate to close it, the hinge barrel is worn and the gate’s full weight is now on the latch.
  • Post wobbles when you push on it. In Los Angeles’s clay soil, water pools around the post base during winter rains and softens the backfill. If the post moves more than a quarter inch, the concrete collar or gravel base has failed and the post needs to be re-set.
  • Pickets cupping or splitting along the grain. Los Angeles’s dry summer heat pulls moisture out of wood-look pickets faster than the finish can flex. Cupping means the picket wasn’t sealed on the back face, or it was installed without a gap for expansion. Either way, the fix is picket replacement, not paint.
  • Rust streaks running down from the post caps or hinge plates. The factory powder coat on American Standard posts is good, but once a scratch goes through to the galvanized layer, coastal moisture in areas like Playa del Rey or San Pedro starts working. The post is structurally fine, but the cap or hinge needs replacement before the rust spreads under the coating.
  • Fence line leans after winter rains. This is the classic Los Angeles soil story. The entire fence looks fine in October and leans ten degrees by March. The posts weren’t set deep enough or the backfill didn’t include drainage gravel. Pulling and re-setting posts is the permanent fix.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled hall bathroom with subway tile and a floating vanity

In Los Angeles, a full American Standard fence installation runs $4,130 – $10,620 for a typical residential yard. Post replacement on an existing fence runs $250 – $650 per post, installed. A gate rebuild with new hinges, latch, and frame reinforcement runs $400 – $1,000 depending on gate width and whether we’re replacing the frame or just the hardware.

What drives the price up: linear footage, post depth (Los Angeles building code wants 30 – 36 inches for fence posts in most soil zones), access to the fence line, and whether we’re digging around irrigation lines. What drives it down: straightforward yard geometry, existing posts in good condition, and gate hardware that just needs tightening rather than replacement.

Every quote includes the parts, labor, concrete or gravel backfill for posts, and haul-away of the old material. The price we hand you in writing is the price on the invoice. No change orders, no surprise line items. And the work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That promise is in writing, on every job.

DIY or Call Us?

Fence work isn’t in the same danger category as garage-door springs or electrical panels, but there are a few things we’d tell a friend to think twice about before doing themselves. Setting posts properly in Los Angeles soil means digging below the clay layer, adding drainage gravel, and checking plumb in two directions at once. Get the post lean wrong by a few degrees and the gate will never hang right, no matter how much you adjust the hinges. That’s the kind of fix that costs more than a clean install would have in the first place.

Here’s what you can safely check on your own: tighten hinge screws with a hand screwdriver (not a drill, which strips the hole), clear dirt and grass from the post bases so water drains away, and note which posts lean after rain. That information saves us time on the estimate and helps us give you a tighter written number. When you’re ready to have the heavy lifting handled, call us at (213) 277-6578. Give you a number first, then pick up the tools.
